Ay'rees was raised on a pirate ship from his early youth, not having any memories of before the ship. He spent his whole youth there but eventually the ship was destroyed in a terrible storm. He washed up, alone, in western Thanalan and after he got his energy back, he started looking for his adopted family or the rest of the crew. While looking, he was attacked by a voidsent and drained of nearly all his aether before he was saved by a group of scouting yellowjackets. It left him with less aether than most people.
